Experience One with The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey was memorable for the wrong reasons (evaluating a sweet, tasting room wines just isn’t my thing). So it was a pleasant surprise during my first visit to the gorgeous Canon City winery to learn that this style of red as just the toasting on an oak stave, so to speak.

Turquoise Mesa Vineyards 2008 Colorado Crimson
The name Colorado Crimson doesn’t really tell you much about this wine, but if you know anything about Tom Bueb, the Turquoise Mesa Vineyards winemaker, you’ll know it’s right up his alley. He likes his Rhone wines.
Sutcliffe Vineyards 2009 Cinsaut
Cinsaut (or cinsault) is a grape that has thrived in the Languedoc region of France for centuries. Sutcliffe Vineyards is one of the few Colorado wineries to notice it may also thrive along the Western Slope.
Sutcliffe Vineyards 2009 Merlot
This Merlot is a good indication of the style of wine Sutcliffe Vineyards winemaker Joe Buckel is shooting for. Sure, it’s fruit driven. It kind of has to be to some respect in Colorado where high summertime temperatures ratchet up the sugar in our grapes. Terror Creek Winery 2006 Pinot Noir
We’ve been loving many of the wines to come out of the West Elks AVA recently, mainly because they have a consistent style among the three grapes
Sutcliffe Vineyards 2010 Sauvignon Blanc
Do you like Sauvignon Blanc? The answer to that probably depends on what versions you have and where they came from. There’s a diversity of flavors that come from a sense of place.
Sutcliffe Vineyards 2010 Rosé
It’s not often we taste a Rosé in the dead of winter, but Denver has been so darn warm lately, it seemed like a good idea to sip on one, a 2010 offering from Sutcliffe Vineyards.
Desert Moon Vineyards 2009 Shiver
Here’s the deal. Usually, when a wine is done in a short-cut style of a tradition, it’s not as good. Carbonated sparkling wine compared to the stuff done in Champagne method, for example. So it was with a little apprehension that I tasted the Shiver from Desert Moon Vineyards in Centennial.
Black Bridge Winery 2009 Reserve Pinot Noir
Some still question whether Pinot Noir is a viable grape option in Colorado. Well, it is in Paonia most years. Need proof?
Verso Cellars 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon
Winemakers have styles. Paul Phillips is no exception. The winemaker/owner of Verso Cellars does one thing: Cabernet Sauvignon.
