Experience One with The Winery at Holy Cross Abbey was memorable for the wrong reasons (evaluating a sweet, tasting room wines just isn’t my thing). So it was a pleasant surprise during my first visit to the gorgeous Canon City winery to learn that this style of red as just the toasting on an oak stave, so to speak.

Sutcliffe Vineyards 2009 Cinsaut
Cinsaut (or cinsault) is a grape that has thrived in the Languedoc region of France for centuries. Sutcliffe Vineyards is one of the few Colorado wineries to notice it may also thrive along the Western Slope.
Sutcliffe Vineyards 2009 Merlot
This Merlot is a good indication of the style of wine Sutcliffe Vineyards winemaker Joe Buckel is shooting for. Sure, it’s fruit driven. It kind of has to be to some respect in Colorado where high summertime temperatures ratchet up the sugar in our grapes. But there’s a solid attempt at producing a wine with structure and acidic backbone that can age.
Garfield Estates Vineyard 2009 Syrah
It’s been a little while since we’ve gotten our hands on a Garfield Estates selection. The 2009 Syrah reminded us not to take so damn long before we try another.

Colterris 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon
There’s at least one similarity between the Colterris Wines 2008 and 2009 Cabernet Sauvignon: It opens up well.
Guy Drew Vineyards 2009 Riesling
When talking about acidic wines in Colorado, it’s usually in reference to ones made from grapes at high elevations. In many of the lower-lying areas around Palisade, for example, the Colorado heat produces wines higher in sugar after long days of cooking on the vines.
Anemoi Wine 2009 Boreas
The winemaker wasn’t kidding. The guy behind the brand spankin’ new brand Anemoi Wine wanted to produce a bottle that was bigger, bolder and more new world than the vino he makes for his 15-year-old label, Canyon Wind Cellars.
Alfred Eames Cellars 2009 Pinot Noir
The 2009 Pinot Noir from Alfred Eames Cellars represents the first time I have been able to taste one style from one producer over the course of three vintages.
